Dorothy Brown met Hello Carnoustie the other day to tell us more about how her small business ‘Dorothy’s Preserves and Chutneys’ got started.
The story began when Dorothy worked at The Grove Academy back then her grandson, Stuart Duncan, had the opportunity to go to Tanzania as part of his World Challenge.
Dorothy is Stewart’s grandmother on his mother’s side, Olive Duncan (sadly no longer with us, of Olive’s Flower Shop fame) is Stewart's grandmother on his father’s side. Showing true entrepreneurial flair Stewart started raising his own funds by creating his own Carnoustie Calendar and raised the funds himself by asking 12 businesses to invest in the project. Following his lead Olive said to Dorothy “You make jam don’t you? If you make jam I’ll sell it in the florists ” and the rest is history!
The Duncan and Brown families rose to the challenge of raising £3.5k in 18 months.
Recently Dorothy retired after 26 years at The Grove but retirement didn't mean sitting in her garden (well all the time) for Dorothy, in her own words the business has been “growing like pinocchio’s nose” ever since.
Dorothy buys fresh berries from local farms in 20lb batches at time. Her products do not have any additives or preservatives and are suitable for vegetarians and are gluten free. Her best-selling jam is raspberry; best-selling chutney is spicy rhubarb and a seasonal favourite is always Dorothy’s special Christmas chutney.
This summer Dorothy has introduced new products a zesty lemon curd and a zingy lime curd both are absolutely scrumptious with cheese. Her rhubarb chutney is a knock out with Indian appetisers or as a dip with Nachos.
Dorothy particularly enjoys fete days at local primary schools and the various craft fayres that happen almost every weekend (whilst her husband is enjoying his golf). You will find her stall at any of these upcoming events:
